The town of York(old Toronto) was established as a naval base to defend against the U.S. Before Toronto the city wasn't even a city. It was a town with a population of 9,000. It was named the Town Of York. The Town Of York was established in 1790s. The old town of York was incorporated on March 6, 1834, changing its name to Toronto to distinguish if from New York City.

In 1834 Toronto was incorporated with boundaries ending at Bathurst Street to the West, Queen Street to the North, and Parliament Street to the East. The first Parliament building built in 1829-1832 in Ontario was in Toronto and so established the Provincial capital of Ontario. A Mechanic Institute was founded in 1830 by James Lessile to provide technical and adult education, in 1883 its was changed into a multi-reference library(Public Library).
